Small Bathroom Design Ideas

20th June 2024

Small is a good thing!

When designing a small bathroom make sure to prioritise.

Here is a bathroom list, use it to help identify what you need and don’t need in your bathroom.

Shower and/or bath

It would be nice to have a big bathroom with space for a bath and a shower but for most of us this isn’t realistic, so choose. A bath with a shower over is the best of both worlds and far easier if you have kids but a shower is super luxurious. If your space is really small your only option will be a shower.

With the WC you need to be aware of plumbing and this will affect the room layout. The toilet will need a larger waste pipe and so will, ideally be situated on an outside wall so that the pipe can go straight out of the property. Putting the WC in the correct place is a big consideration when designing a room layout.

Storage/vanity unit/sink

Storage is so important in a bathroom and if space is limited it can make life annoying. Think about adding built-in storage which goes to the ceiling as this can create lots more normally unused space.

Adding a vanity unit with a built-in sink and putting a mirrored storage unit on the wall creates plenty of nooks to hide things. Making sure you have specific places for things to live helps with space management and tidiness, for example, tooth care products always live in the wall hung mirror cupboard and towels which aren’t used often, are at the top of the full height built-in cupboard. Recently I have made a conscious effort not to buy more than I need so I have stopped buying things because they were on offer, this stops me from filling cupboards to bursting point. I also find that I would forget I had it before and then end up buying more which was ridiculous.

A vanity unit, as I’ve said above, can add lots of storage but if you prefer a basin there are some very pretty options around. Make sure it is big enough for your needs, like shaving.

Towel rail

Adding a towel rail is great as it would warm the room as well as help dry your towels. It will also help stop damp forming.

Boiler storage

Back to storage! Do you have a boiler in this room? Are you able to change/move your boiler into your loft space or create a cupboard in the hallway? If so, this would create valuable space which might mean you could have a bath and a shower!

Clothes washing storage

A small space has to work harder so always try to have several uses for things, like clothes washing storage which can double as a seat. This nifty idea allows you to separate clothes into light and dark, looks pretty and has two uses as shown in this image.

Glam up the space

Don’t forget to glam up the space. Add a chandelier, expensive wallpaper, gorgeous curtains, plants or fancy pictures, make sure they are all suitable for wet areas. As long as you have adequate ventilation this room doesn’t need to be tanked from floor to ceiling in tiles. If it is a small space things like wallpaper can be changed quite inexpensively but can create a beautiful, sophisticated atmosphere. The only thing I would say is don’t put these thing in a place where water will be splashing them regularly.

If you need help with room layout or a full Interior Design consultation please call. Getting the space planned right will save you time and money. With a full consultation I can recommend and arrange trades and give you inspiration to make your bathroom perfect.
